Alpaca's API traffic nearly 4x'd in Q1 2026, AI agents are the reason

Alpaca, the developer-first US broker whose API Cresori already connects to, reported a sharp jump in API trading activity for Q1 2026. The cause, according to Alpaca: AI agents.
The numbers
Monthly API usage growth went from single digits in Q4 2025 to roughly 30% month-over-month in Q1 2026, an acceleration of almost 4x quarter-over-quarter. Alpaca's own framing is that this mirrors the adoption curve of AI tools generally: a broader set of users is reaching markets through AI- and agent-driven interactions with the API instead of hand-written trading code.
Co-founder and CEO Yoshi Yokokawa put it this way: "APIs once gave developers direct access to financial markets. AI is now broadening that access to a much larger group of users. People no longer need to build everything from scratch in code to express trading logic and interact with financial systems. As AI becomes the front door, APIs become even more important as the foundation underneath."
What shipped alongside it
Alpaca added a new command-line interface and an enhanced MCP Server, the same Model Context Protocol plumbing that lets AI agents (Claude, ChatGPT, and others) query market data, reason over it, and act on it directly instead of going through custom integration code. It's the latest in a run of 2026 additions: multi-leg options, 24/5 trading, fully-paid securities lending, fixed-income access, and, per BrokerChooser's January "Best Broker for Algorithmic Trading 2026" writeup, fresh FICC, OCC and Nasdaq memberships.
Why this matters if you use Cresori
Alpaca is one of the brokers Cresori connects to directly. Brokers are opening their APIs to AI agents faster than most people are updating their mental model of who has access to their account. If you're on Alpaca and start pointing an AI agent at it, through the MCP Server or otherwise, know exactly what access you've granted, and revoke it the moment you stop using it.
