Coinbase loses its Michigan court fight over prediction markets

A rough stretch for Coinbase continues: a week after posting a third straight quarterly revenue decline, the company lost a legal fight over its prediction-markets product.
What happened
A federal judge denied Coinbase's preliminary injunction against Michigan regulators, who are moving to enforce state gambling law against Coinbase's Kalshi-powered sports event contracts. Coinbase had argued federal law preempts state authority here, since Kalshi's contracts are regulated at the federal level by the CFTC, the same argument we covered the SEC exploring more broadly as a path to regulatory clarity. The judge rejected it.
Why it's notable
This is a federal-versus-state jurisdiction fight, not a crypto-specific one, but it lands right in the middle of the broader prediction-markets boom we've been tracking across brokers this summer. If federal preemption doesn't hold up in court, every exchange offering CFTC-regulated event contracts still has to reckon with state-by-state gambling law, a much messier compliance picture than "one federal regulator, one set of rules."
Why this matters if you use Cresori
Coinbase is one of the brokers Cresori connects to directly. This doesn't affect your account today, but it's a live example of the gap between "federally regulated" and "resolved," prediction markets are still being fought over jurisdiction by jurisdiction, and which products stay available where could keep shifting for a while yet.
